I'm still struggling to make a decision for ds2 (2nd grade) about what to use for Language Arts.

Can you all please post what you use and why you like it? I would really like to use a package deal for him, instead of separating out spelling, phonics, reading, writing, grammar, etc.

I appreciate any input you can give. :0)

We do CQLA (Character Quality Language Arts). My grade 2 student did Pre A level. It included some reading, copywork, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, composition, dictation...I had to supplement some quality literature reading but that was all.

I like it because it is all in together. I like it because it is comprehensive and all set out for me and them. I like it because it progresses along getting ever so slightly more challenging. I like it because it deals with character qualities I like for my children to have. And finally I like it because it comes in multiple levels for all my children but they are all dealing with the same character quality.

You can find out all about it at http://www.tfths.com/

I know you said you really want an all in one kind of deal, but I had to mention R&S for grammar and phonics, Spelling Wisdom for spelling, and Writing With Ease for writing.

Take a look and see what you think.

We just discovered Learning Language Arts Through Literature this past year and we are really loving it! My son is half way through 1st grade and my daughter is currently working on the Gold book (British Lit.) My friend and her daughter loved what they saw in our books are are currently working on the green book and they love it too. I'm so glad to have "discovered" it. I already have 2nd grade (the red book) lined up for my son.

Sharelle, I will definitely check that out. Thanks for the link.

Jen and Gina, we have used LLATL in the past, but I didn't care for it as much in the older grades. I'll have to check it out again though for ds2 since he's only in 2nd.

Carrie, it's funny that you mention those! I was thinking of R&S and we used WWE last year! Laughing I'll be checking those out again this weekend for sure. Smile

Thank you ladies, for your advice and input. Smile

I don't do "language arts." Very Happy

If you want everything in one fell swoop, then you're looking at LLATL, which you said you didn't care for. Each of the components of literacy (spelling, phonics, reading, composition, grammar, et al) are so complex--and different--that it's no wonder most are taught individually in the earlier years.

For a 7yo little person, IMHO grammar isn't necessary; phonics is only necessary if he's not yet reading at his age level; reading doesn't need to be much more than his narrating back to you what he's read; composition is still learning how to write cohesive, properly punctuated and capitalized sentences. If you did something with him such as Writing Strands Level 2, you'd pretty much have it covered.

I ended up going with Abeka! Shocked That kinda surprises me, LOL! I still have things to use to supplement if need be, so that's good. Smile Thanks for all of your advice.
