In my reading of ordinary books, I have come across some references to the Calvert School from people who have used it many years ago. I am wondering if anyone has used or is using Calvert School programs and if that sort of study would be appropriate for a bright eight-year-old boy. How much time, participation and preparation would be required of me in such a program. Lastly, do you think that it is worth the money?

We used Calvert through 8th grade with both our sons. It is a complete program - everything comes to you in a box. The manuals do teach you how to teach. From 6th grade up, the manuals are written to the student.

We thoroughly enjoyed it - but it is not for everyone. It is highly structured and academic -- and if your child has a different learning style, it can be a challenge to adapt it. (Although - you can call Calvert School and their "advisers" do a wonderful job of helping you figure out what will work with your child!)

We used their ATS (Advisory Teaching Service) where we would send in tests every 20 lessons. (It was a way that our state would allow us to homeschool without any further involvement from the state!) That added a level of stress - but at the same time gave us accountability outside of "mom." I found my kids had some wonderful advisory teachers who could develop a relationship and draw out wonderful work from them.

For 3rd grade - ds1 and I were usually done in 2 hours. 4th grade was a big jump in expectations and probably took about 4 hours. By the time they were in 8th -- it was closer to 5 or 6 hours. A lot of the time needed depends on your child. Ds1 could work through everything quickly. Ds2 was easily distracted and to this day takes longer to do things.

Was it worth it? Well - yes and no. When we started hsing, my dh was very uncomfortable with the idea of hsing. He would allow me to do it with Calvert -- so in that sense it was well worth it Smile It worked well for us - so we continued as long as we could -- through the 8th grade. If I had to do it over -- I would put together my own stuff -- but that is because I now have a better idea of what is out there. But - it did take the stress of planning away -- and I probably spent less -- because now I often purchase curriculum that I never get around to using!

We started out on Calvert because it was simple to follow and I was nervous. After about four years I began getting my own curriculum. They have a sound program (at least they did way back then!).

A Homeschooler's Checklist ... Public schools are in session again in our hometown and even though we homeschool year-round in a relaxed style, our children have been motivated to create a new fall schedule and get ready for another homeschool year.
